1981 – 1984 Ph.D.-thesis on production and characterization of microbial biosurfactants in the group of Prof. Dr. Fritz Wagner; scientific co-worker at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the TU Braunschweig (FRG)
1985 – 1990 Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the TU Braunschweig (FRG) and head of the newly formed research group "Regio- and stereoselective bioconversions"; research on bioconversions of cyclic amides (cooperation with Prof. Dr. Fritz Wagner and Prof. Dr. Karsten Krohn) and of silicon organic compounds (cooperation with Prof. Dr. Reinhold Tacke)
